Students Succeed at Speech and Theatre Competition

Newberry, SC, On Saturday February 1, 2014 students from the Newberry College Department of Arts and Communications competed in the South Carolina Speech and Theatre Association State College Festival Competition held at Newberry College. Students participating on the Newberry College team included: Amanda Williams, Kenny Robinson, Alex Sanchez, Beth Briggs, Tate McDaniel, Imani Whitaker, Trung Duong, Angela Chancay, Samantha Muster, Jessine Hughes, and Carson Lambert. Students were under the direction of Professors Patrick Gagliano, Mandy Butler, and Matthew Fuller. Many Newberry College students also helped with the days activities including: James Page, Brittany Venzen, Rachel Williams, and Anna Katherine Thomas. Judges included current NC faculty and staff Jane Willis, Amanda McSwine, and Marilyn Seymour, as well as alumni Vicky Saye Henderson and Andrew Skaggs.

 

The following Newberry College students were recognized for their outstanding work:

Theatrical Design:

2nd place Beth Briggs

 

Informative Speaking:

1st place Amanda Williams

2nd place Tate McDaniel

 

Persuasive Speaking:

2nd place Kenny Robinson

 

Prose Interpretation:

2nd Place Trung Duong

3rd place Amanda Williams

 

Duet Acting

3rd Place Amanda Williams and Alex Sanchez

 

Additionally, Amanda Williams won the Triathlon Award. This award is given annually to the student who enters three events with at least one of the events a Theatre event, one event a Performance Studies event, and one of the events a Public Speaking event. The student with the highest combined score in all three events wins the Triathlon Award, the highest individual award the South Carolina Speech and Theatre Association gives. This is the second time in the past three years that a Newberry College student has won the award following Stephanie Strickland in 2012.

 

We congratulate these fine students, faculty, staff and alumni for their accomplishments and contributions. The next college festival competition is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Newberry College.
